The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Pakistan has awarded a grant of PKR 4 million to Karakoram International University (KIU) under the Ambassadorial Merit-cum-Need Scholarship initiative, further strengthening educational cooperation between the two countries. Gwadar Pro quoting a statement issued by KIU, officials from the Chinese Embassy handed over the grant, which will be used to support deserving and talented students at the university’s main campus and three sub-campuses.
“The scholarship aims to empower financially challenged yet academically strong students in pursuing higher education,” reads the statement. Every year, more than 100 students from KIU Gilgit and its affiliated campuses receive scholarships under the Chinese ambassador’s initiative.
KIU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah expressed gratitude to the Chinese ambassador and the embassy team, calling the support a significant step toward empowering youth in Gilgit-Baltistan.
“This scholarship will help produce highly educated and skilled graduates who will contribute positively to society,” he said. “This gesture is highly valuable for the students, the university and the region.”
On Nov. 25, 2025, KIU awarded scholarship cheques to 95 PhD, MS and BS students under the China-Pakistan Friendship Merit-cum-Need Scholarship Programme. Since 2022, more than 500 KIU students have benefited from the Chinese ambassador’s scholarships, while the latest assistance will allow additional deserving and meritorious students to benefit in the coming cycle.
