Pakistani Scholars strengthen horticultural expertise at Summer School in ChinaBreaking

The 2026 International Summer School on Horticultural Plant Biology concluded at Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU), Wuhan, China, bringing together over 50 students and scholars from Pakistan, Australia, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and China for a two-week program of academic exchange and cultural immersion.

It was jointly organized by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), and co-hosted by the National Key Laboratory for Germplasm Innovation and Utilization of Horticultural Crops, the College of Horticulture & Forestry Sciences, and the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges at HZAU.

The summer school focused on cutting-edge frontiers in horticultural plant biology, according to a report carried by Gwadar Pro.

The academic program featured nine specialized lectures covering research frontiers such as plant epigenetics and chromatin remodeling, photosynthesis and chloroplast development, and plant small RNAs.

Participants were then divided into groups for six hands-on laboratory exercises to gain hands-on experience in citrus developmental biology, plant cell-to-cell communication, and tomato molecular marker development.

Beyond the laboratory, attendees visited agricultural technology companies for industry inspections to observe modern agricultural innovation and technology commercialization. Cultural excursions to the Hubei Provincial Museum and the Yellow Crane Tower, as well as workshops on traditional Chinese flower arranging, paper cutting and tea ceremonies, provided participants with an in-depth immersion into Chinese heritage.

During the closing ceremony, certificates were presented to all participants by university officials.

Shoaib Munir, Ph.D., Associate Professor at HZAU and a native of Pakistan, who served as coordinator of the event, highlighted the significance of the program for the modernization of the horticulture sector in Pakistan.

“Such training exposes young researchers to advanced technologies, global research trends, and new approaches for sustainable agriculture. The participation of Pakistani scholars highlights the global potential of Pakistani talent.”

Hassan Bin Munir, a Ph.D. scholar from PMAS Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi with expertise in controlled environment agriculture attended the summer school to enhance his knowledge of conservation horticulture, plant biology and advanced research techniques.

He noted that sessions on plant stress physiology and modern molecular approaches to horticultural crops were particularly valuable to him, as were laboratory exercises demonstrating how modern technologies can be integrated into horticultural research.

“Through the lectures, laboratory sessions, and discussions with experts, I gained insights into gene editing, molecular markers, genomic technologies, and their practical applications in crop improvement,” he explained.

“These experiences are directly relevant to my work in hydroponics and controlled environment agriculture and will help improve research and production practices.”

Arsalan Ishaque, a Ph.D. student in Plant Breeding and Genetics at Universiti Putra Malaysia and originally from Balochistan, Pakistan, attended the summer school as his first visit to China.

“It was way beyond expectations,” Ishaque shared. “China has truly emerged as a global superpower, which reflects in its technological advancements.

Latest techniques and novel research methodologies were shared in the lectures, especially on the development of citrus fruits.”

He participated in laboratory training sessions at a molecular cell biology Lab, where he had the opportunity to observe live cell models using confocal microscopy.

“It was a wonderful experience to see live cell models using confocal microscopy, leading to innovations at the molecular level. I came to China to learn the modern techniques being used in the field of plant sciences, and it helped me to imbibe the latest nuances.”
