Pakistan received Rs83.76 million (US$0.3 million) in November 2025 for the Karachi Sustainable Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project, according to official data released by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in its foreign economic assistance report.

The project carries a total allocation of Rs12.6 billion (US$43.45 million) and is being financed through a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Cumulative disbursements for the project during the July-November period reached Rs3.27 billion (US$11.52 million), indicating steady progress in the implementation of Karachi’s mass transit initiative.

The Karachi Sustainable BRT Project has been designed to address the city’s long-standing urban transport challenges, including traffic congestion, rising commuting costs, and increasing environmental pollution. As Pakistan’s largest metropolitan city and economic hub, Karachi faces intense pressure on its transport infrastructure due to rapid urbanisation and population growth, resulting in prolonged travel times and reduced productivity.

The project aims to establish a modern, efficient, and environmentally sustainable bus rapid transit system to improve mobility for daily commuters. By providing a reliable and affordable public transport option, the initiative seeks to reduce reliance on private vehicles and informal transport services, easing congestion along major corridors and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

A central focus of the project is improving accessibility for low- and middle-income groups who depend heavily on public transport. The BRT system is expected to deliver faster travel times, improved service reliability, and safer commuting conditions. Enhanced connectivity is also anticipated to support economic activity by improving access to employment centres and commercial districts across the city.

Alongside infrastructure development, the project places emphasis on sustainable urban mobility planning and institutional strengthening. Improved management and operational capacity are intended to ensure the long-term viability of the BRT system and its integration with Karachi’s wider transport network.

Officials view the Karachi Sustainable BRT Project as a key intervention to modernise urban transport in the city, reduce environmental impact, and improve the quality of life for millions of residents. The phased release of funds reflects ongoing implementation, with further disbursements expected as construction and operational milestones are achieved.
