What Really Happened? PTI Dismisses Claims of Former Army Chief Meeting Imran KhanBreaking

June 01, 2026

Rumours on Pakistani social media this week quickly spread that former army chiefs had held a secret meeting with former Prime Minister Imran Khan inside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. The claims took off in a hurry, with wild speculation swirling about what was going on behind the scenes.

But Aleema Khan, sister of Imran Khan, has publicly rejected the reports, calling them "fake" and calling them a deliberate disinformation campaign.

Aleema Khan said the rumours were being spread to distract from what she described as the continued isolation of the jailed PTI founder. Instead, she said the focus should be on concerns about Khan’s prison conditions, restrictions on meetings and access to family members.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan also dismissed the reports, describing them as baseless. Party leaders have repeatedly maintained that no such meeting took place and that the narrative is being amplified to distract from issues they consider more significant.

PTI's Main Concern: Isolation in Adiala Jail

The controversy comes as PTI continues to criticize Khan’s conditions in detention. Party leaders claim he has been severely restricted in family visits, meetings with supporters and access to books and other materials.

PTI representatives have also expressed concerns about Khan’s medical treatment, including his eyesight. The party claims that court orders on visitation rights have not been fully enforced.

But government and prison officials have consistently insisted that Khan is being given the facilities and medical treatment available under the prison rules. He has been medically evaluated and treated as appropriate, officials said.

Why the Rumour Matters

Political analysts say the rumour drew attention because any reported meetings between Imran Khan and former military leaders would have had huge political implications. Such a development could be a sign of changes in Pakistan’s tense political environment.

But after Aleema Khan and the PTI leadership rejected the reports, the focus returned to the wider discussion of Khan’s imprisonment and prison conditions.

The question for PTI supporters is not if a former army chief visited Adiala Jail. They say the bigger question is why the debate over Khan's conditions of detention is still controversial nearly three years after his arrest.

The controversy highlights the continuing information war over Pakistan’s most prominent political prisoner. Supporters and detractors are still fighting over competing narratives, and legal challenges and political protests continue.

With social media’s growing impact on public opinion, unverified claims can spread rapidly, often before any official response is available. The latest controversy is yet another example of the tussle over political narratives in Pakistan’s highly polarised climate.

PTI’s official stance on the issue is that no ex-army chief met Imran Khan in Adiala Jail, and the party believes the claims going viral are an effort to divert the public’s attention from issues surrounding his detention.
