Veteran actor Bushra Ansari has stirred a heated debate on social media after she questioned the use of female oriented roles by male comedians, in television comedy.

During a morning show, Ansari remarked on the reasons why actors dress up as women or play exaggerated feminine roles to make people laugh. She also wondered if some of the exaggerated scenes and conversations are really funny or just a comedy formula that has become normalized over time.

Her comments went viral soon with many social media users backing her viewpoint. Some said Pakistani comedy has been using the same stereotypes for years and that writers should focus more on original humour than repeated character tropes.

Others disagreed, however, saying Ansari’s comments were being taken out of context. Critics noted that comedy has always been about actors playing fictional characters unlike their real selves. Such performances are intended to entertain and not necessarily considered offensive or problematic, they said.
