Just one day after another increase, motorists in Pakistan are once again facing higher fuel costs, adding fresh pressure to household budgets and the wider economy.

The federal government has raised the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) with effect from September 11. Petrol has been increased by Rs3.05 per litre while HSD has been increased by Rs5.37 per litre.

The price of petrol will be Rs370.80 a litre after the latest revision and high-speed diesel will be Rs398.04 a litre. The updated rates were notified by the Petroleum Division.

Another rise in just 24 hours
The latest hike came a day after the government had already raised petrol and diesel prices by Rs3.40 and Rs6.72 a litre respectively for September 10.

The successive increases are likely to compound consumer concerns, especially those highly reliant on private cars and public transport.

The importance of fuel prices
Changes in petroleum prices also have a ripple effect beyond the gas station. Higher diesel prices can increase transportation and logistics costs, which can increase prices of goods and services.

How much more will travel, commute and day-to-day living cost? The immediate question for the average consumer is simple.

The latest increase also comes amid pressure on world oil markets from rising tensions in the Middle East.

For millions of Pakistanis, the bigger worry isn’t just the price at the pump. It’s what that price will mean for everything else they buy.
