Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir Perform Umrah During Official Saudi VisitBreaking

August 07, 2026

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir have been in the news performing Umrah in Makkah during their official visit to Saudi Arabia at a time when Pakistan is in the grip of economic and diplomatic challenges. Supporters have called the visit a show of faith and solidarity while many see it as a watershed moment in Pakistan-Saudi relations. The visit has been widely discussed.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and other senior officials arrived in Saudi Arabia on a three-day official visit and performed Umrah. Before the start of the pilgrimage the Pakistani delegation was allowed to enter the Holy Kaaba, a privilege reserved for a select few guests.

The delegation offered special prayers for the prosperity of Pakistan and its economic stability, the well-being of Muslim Ummah and for lasting peace in the world. Photos released by the Prime Minister's Office showed the leaders in traditional Ihram as they performed the religious rituals in the Grand Mosque.

The visit comes as Pakistan seeks to boost economic cooperation and strategic ties with Saudi Arabia. Religious diplomacy has long played an important role in the alliance of the two countries, and this visit reaffirms those age-old ties.

While the Umrah itself is a deeply personal act of worship, the presence of Pakistan's top civilian and military leadership together has drawn significant public attention. He is expected to hold talks at the highest level to promote bilateral co-operation, investment and regional stability.

As the official trip progresses, observers will be watching for announcements that could further deepen Pakistan-Saudi relations, while reflecting the country’s broader diplomatic priorities.
