Pakistan’s transport imports surge 67% as vehicle purchases accelerate

Pakistan’s transport import bill surged 67.17% to Rs1.143 trillion during July-June 2025-26, with road motor vehicles accounting for the bulk of purchases, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The latest PBS data available with Wealth Pakistan showed that transport imports increased from Rs683.48 billion in the preceding year. In dollar terms, the bill climbed by 66.36% to $4.065 billion from $2.443 billion over the same period in FY25.

Road motor vehicles, comprising completely built units (CBUs), completely knocked down and semi-knocked down units, parts, accessories and other related items, dominated the transport group. Their imports increased by 66.17% to Rs1.092 trillion from Rs657.07 billion.

In dollar terms, road motor vehicle imports rose by 65.37% to $3.885 billion from $2.349 billion.

Imports of CBUs increased by 76.97% to Rs194.27 billion during the year from Rs109.77 billion. Their dollar value rose by 76.09% to $691.61 million from $392.75 million.

Within the completely built unit category, imports of buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles posted the strongest growth. Their import bill surged by 180.13% to Rs87.56 billion from Rs31.26 billion. In dollar terms, these imports increased by 178.53% to $311.42 million from $111.81 million.

Motor car imports under the CBU category rose by 36.37% to Rs106.02 billion from Rs77.74 billion. Their dollar value grew by 35.79% to $377.76 million from $278.19 million.

However, CBU motorcycle imports declined by 11.35% to Rs683 million from Rs770 million. In dollar terms, they fell by 11.89% to $2.43 million from $2.75 million.

Imports of completely and semi-knocked-down vehicles recorded strong growth of 72.49%, reaching Rs767.82 billion from Rs445.13 billion in the preceding year. In dollar terms, the category increased by 71.72% to $2.731 billion from $1.591 billion. Motor cars led this category, with imports jumping by 93.13% to Rs595.63 billion from Rs308.41 billion. Their dollar value increased by 92.23% to $2.118 billion from $1.102 billion. In the same category, imports of buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles rose by 21.59% to Rs149.95 billion from Rs123.32 billion. Their dollar value grew by 21.13% to $533.80 million. Motorcycle imports increased by 65.92% to Rs22.24 billion from Rs13.41 billion, while their dollar value rose by 65.29% to $79.26 million.

Imports of vehicle parts and accessories reached Rs114.94 billion, rising by 24.71% from Rs92.17 billion. In dollar terms, the category increased by 23.89% to $408.72 million.

Aircraft, ships and boats imports rose by 54.24% to Rs37.03 billion from Rs24.01 billion, while other transport equipment imports climbed by 469.53% to Rs13.70 billion from Rs2.41 billion.

The monthly data also showed strong momentum in June 2026, when transport imports increased by 42.83% from May 2026. In dollar terms, the June 2026 bill rose by 45.31% month-on-month.
