Lack of govt support hampers chromite ore mining in Balochistan

Lack of basic infrastructure facilities and bank credit are hampering the growth of chromite ore mining in Muslim Bagh area of Balochistan.

Dilawar Shah, a mine owner, told WealthPK that lack of financial support in terms of credit through formal sources hampered growth of mining. He said lack of technical surveys for exploitation of subsurface chromite ores and shortage of explosives were the other major issues they were facing. He also pointed out the lack of technical training for labourers, which increased the cost of production. He said methods of mining were still outdated.  Shah noted that fluctuations in the market price of ore caused uncertainty among mine owners. He said no security was provided to the remotely located mines.

He also complained about the unavailability of basic health and emergency services at the mining sites. He said the mining sites also lacked well-carpeted roads, transportation and sewerage systems.  Munshi Gul, another mine owner, said that roads were mostly not carpeted, and became slippery and muddy during rains. He also complained that often local disputes caused the closure of mining sites. He called for more financial support to lease holders, including low-markup or interest-free loans as well as government and private sector investments. He said minimising taxes, ensuring finances for infrastructure development, equipment availability and training of workforce were critical for mining sector development.

Gul said ensuring timely supply of explosives at optimal prices can help boost the chromite ore production.  He called for implementation of labour safety laws through the provision of water, canteen (food), shelter and medical facilities at the sites. The major application of chromite is in production of stainless steel. As chromium is a highly corrosion resistant element, it is used to increase the resistance of steel against corrosion and discoloration. Moreover, a small proportion of chromite is also used in foundry, chemicals and pigments.
