Pakistani academic and author Ayesha Alam has documented her firsthand observations of China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in her newly published book, Xinjiang: A Journey of Dreams in the Embrace of Mountains, exploring the region’s Islamic heritage, cultural identity and modern development.

Alam, who heads the Department of Pakistan Studies at Hazara University in Mansehra, visited various parts of Xinjiang in June 2026, exploring its streets, traditional markets, educational institutions and historical sites.

Her book draws on these visits and personal observations to offer readers an account of the region’s cultural life, development and changing landscape, Gwadar Pro reported.

Talking to Gwadar Pro, Alam said, “From the historic streets and bustling bazaars of Kashgar to mosques, Islamic architecture and museums, the book explores Xinjiang’s diverse heritage and traditions.”

It also examines developments in education, science, technology, healthcare and the economy, highlighting the region’s growing importance as a link between China, Central Asia and the wider world, she said.
A significant part of the book focuses on Xinjiang’s Muslim communities, their cultural traditions and everyday lives.

Through her observations, Alam encourages readers to develop a broader understanding of the region by looking beyond headlines and examining its people, institutions and communities through direct experience.

The book also explores Xinjiang’s contemporary transformation, connecting its historical and cultural legacy with developments in education, infrastructure and economic activity.

Its geographical position and links with neighbouring regions further underline its importance for regional connectivity and cross-border engagement.

For Pakistani readers, the publication offers a perspective on a region relevant to Pakistan-China relations, cultural exchanges and regional cooperation.

By combining travel observations with historical and contemporary themes, Alam seeks to bring readers closer to Xinjiang’s people, heritage and development.

Alam has previously written on China’s economic development and Pakistan-China relations.

Her earlier publications include Under the Shadow of Himalayas: Pak-China Relations, Opportunities and Challenges in English and its Roman Urdu version, Himalaya Ke Saaye Talay: Pak-China Dosti Ka Safar.

Her other works include Global Dragon: Perspectives on China’s Economic Surge, which examines China’s economic rise, and Xinjiang: Paharon Ki Aaghosh Mein Khwabon Ka Safar, the Urdu version of her latest book.

Through her publications, Alam has explored Pakistan-China relations, China’s development and the cultural connections between the two countries. Her latest work brings these interests together through an account of her visits to Xinjiang and her observations of the region’s heritage and contemporary life.
