A tragic incident unfolded in the Chishtian tehsil of Bahawalnagar, where a poor vegetable vendor ended his life after receiving an unaffordable electricity bill amounting to thousands of rupees. The deceased’s father informed the police that his son, who ran a vegetable cart, was deeply distressed after receiving a bill of Rs. 17,000. Overwhelmed by the burden, he consumed poison to end his life. The grieving father expressed that they do not wish to pursue legal action against anyone. This heartbreaking incident comes amid growing frustration across the country over soaring electricity bills, with the public facing severe financial strain. In response to this crisis, Jamaat-e-Islami recently held a protest in Islamabad, which concluded with an agreement with the government to review IPP contracts and reduce electricity prices.
