Punjab to introduce electric bikes, buses in a bid to combat smogBreaking

August 15, 2024

The Punjab government is taking a bold step to tackle environmental pollution by introducing electric bikes and buses. Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, who chaired a high-level meeting in Lahore, revealed the plan as part of a comprehensive strategy to reduce smog and improve air quality in the province. The meeting, attended by officials from the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), focused on progress in key areas, including air quality, education, population control, and healthcare. The delegation reviewed a feasible roadmap aimed at eliminating smog in Lahore, a city grappling with severe air pollution. One of the major points discussed was the identification of smoke-emitting bikes using Safe City cameras, followed by imposing fines. The briefing highlighted that the burning of crop residue, particularly in May, exacerbates smog levels. A significant goal is to present this issue directly to the Prime Minister for further action.

Alarmingly, it was noted that 1,800 new motorcycles are registered daily in Lahore, with motorcycles being the primary contributors to transport-related pollution. Over 75% of air pollution from transportation is caused by motorcycles, stressing the need for effective legislation and enforcement to mitigate smog. Minister Maryam Aurangzeb emphasized the introduction of electric bikes, vehicles, and buses as a critical move to curb environmental pollution. She suggested adopting successful models from Bangladesh and China to enhance control measures. In a stern warning, the minister announced that violators of environmental laws would face heavy fines. She also underscored the importance of public awareness and tree plantation campaigns in the fight against pollution. In addition to environmental measures, the provincial government is set to launch the Middle and Matric Tech program in 500 schools across Punjab to further improve access to education and enhance the quality and governance of the education system.
