His body was found the next day in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Karachi, with a gunshot wound.

Raza’s family maintained that he had been abducted and murdered, while the initial police investigation reportedly considered the possibility of suicide, creating major controversy. At his family’s request, a court ordered his exhumation and a second post-mortem. The later medical report concluded that the gunshot entered from the back and exited through the front, and said the findings were inconsistent with suicide. A judicial commission headed by Sindh High Court Justice Omar Sial is now examining the circumstances of his death and possible negligence in the investigation.
