The Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong on Wednesday said China is ready to work closely with Pakistan to lead by example on the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) platform, strengthen multilateral cooperation and advance the Global Governance Initiative.
Speaking at a seminar titled “25 Years of SCO: Towards Fair Global Governance, Shared Sustainable Development, and Multipolar Cooperation”, the ambassador said safeguarding the rights and interests of the Global South requires aligning vision with concrete action.
The seminar was jointly organised by the NUST Institute of Policy Studies (NIPS) and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Pakistan.
Ambassador Jiang said China and Pakistan, as all-weather strategic cooperative partners and key SCO members, serve as cornerstones of regional peace, stability and multilateralism. Outlining three key areas of cooperation, the ambassador said both countries should first serve as a model of bilateral trust by consolidating the foundation of a shared future. He noted that the strength of China–Pakistan relations lies in unwavering mutual support on issues concerning core interests.
“As we mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, China will enhance exchanges at all levels, deepen strategic communication and translate high-level political trust into tangible outcomes,” he said, adding that more “small and beautiful” livelihood projects would be implemented to further strengthen the China–Pakistan community with a shared future.
Second, he said China and Pakistan should pioneer multilateral collaboration to empower SCO development by fully utilising the organisation’s more than 50 cooperation mechanisms. He stressed strengthening security coordination to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism, as well as transnational crime and cybersecurity threats.
He also highlighted the need to deepen economic integration by facilitating trade and investment, ensuring stable industrial and supply chains, and fostering innovation through cooperation in the digital economy and artificial intelligence.
Third, Ambassador Jiang said China and Pakistan should partner in global governance to promote cooperation among Global South countries. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to upholding the UN-centred international system and international law, safeguarding the outcomes of World War II, and opposing fascism and militarism.
“The journey may be long, but perseverance will see it through,” he said, calling for adherence to the “Shanghai Spirit” and joint efforts to build a community with a shared future for humanity.
Russian Ambassador to Pakistan Albert P. Khorev, UN Additional Secretary Nabil Munir and senior academics also addressed the seminar, highlighting the SCO’s growing role in promoting dialogue, regional security, economic cooperation and sustainable development, while stressing the importance of collective approaches to challenges such as Afghanistan, climate change and global inequality.
