Punjab’s Big EV Push: 120,000 Electric Bikes and Three-Wheelers Planned Across ProvinceBreaking

September 30, 2026

Punjab is set to make a giant leap to electric transport with nearly 120,000 electric two and three-wheelers that will be deployed across the province under the Punjab Clean Air Program (PCAP). The initiative is designed to cut vehicle emissions and make cleaner transport more affordable.

Affordable Electric Vehicle Financing
The proposed program would provide low-interest financing and installment payment plans to help transition commuters and commercial operators from conventional vehicles to electric alternatives. Discussions also centered on how to improve access for women, youth, and low-income groups.

Electric Vehicles Could Also Generate Carbon Credits

Electric vehicles need more than low prices. industry representatives discussed the rollout of charging infrastructure, battery swapping facilities and responsible battery waste management.

Perhaps the most significant facet of the initiative is its potential carbon-credit component. Governments are developing systems to measure, report and verify emissions reductions from the transition to electric vehicles.

The project is being developed to satisfy the requirements for validation under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) managed by Verra. If the necessary reductions are verified and the project meets the applicable rules, the carbon credits generated could be traded.

Government, Banks and EV Industry Join Talks

A stakeholder consultation was convened by the Bank of Punjab, comprising representatives from the Environment, Excise, Transport and Planning & Development departments of Punjab, manufacturers, dealers, battery-swapping companies, financial institutions and consumers.

The government said that feedback received in the consultation would be incorporated in project documents and implementation procedures.

The initiative is part of PCAP’s larger plan to combat smog and air pollution, with electric mobility being one aspect of Punjab’s cleaner-transport vision.

The 120,000-vehicle initiative could accelerate Punjab’s shift toward cleaner and more affordable transportation.

If successfully implemented, the program could also support the province’s wider efforts to tackle emissions and improve air quality.
