The situation quickly became a race against time when a fishing boat drifted helplessly in rough waters nearly 120 nautical miles south of Gwadar. The FV Al Jalali had suffered an engine failure and 19 fishermen, 11 Pakistanis and eight Iranians, were stranded in the Arabian Sea. Thanks to timely intervention of Pakistan Navy, the potentially tragic episode ended with the safe recovery of all crew members.
Official sources said the Pakistan Navy sent the guided-missile frigate PNS Taimur after it received a distress call from the stricken vessel. Naval personnel battled adverse weather conditions to first provide essential supplies to the stranded fishermen and then began a towing operation to bring the fishing boat safely to shore.
The successful rescue highlighted the Navy’s ability to respond swiftly to emergencies in Pakistan’s maritime domain. Operations in remote areas of the sea are usually performed in difficult sea conditions, which complicates and endangers rescue missions. PNS Taimur completed the mission without any casualties.
President Asif Ali Zardari praised the Pakistan Navy for its prompt response and professionalism and its humanitarian spirit during the operation. He described the rescue as a reflection of the armed forces’ commitment to protecting lives at sea, regardless of nationality.
The incident also highlights the importance of maritime search and rescue capabilities in one of the region’s busiest sea routes. With fishermen frequently venturing into deep waters for their livelihoods, rapid emergency response remains essential. Successful rescue of all 19 crew members serves as a reminder of the critical role played by Pakistan’s naval forces in ensuring safety and security across the Arabian Sea.
