Tensions between Iran and the U.S. have escalated another notch after Tehran claimed it fired dozens of explosive drones at American forces at the UAE’s Al Minhad Air Base.

Iran’s army said the attack targeted areas housing U.S. personnel and helicopters at the strategically important base and described the strike as a response to a U.S. attack on Iran’s Larak Island. Iranian state media said the attack happened early Monday as Tehran vowed further retaliation against American forces.

The claims came after the United States hit Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island that Washington said posed an imminent threat to shipping in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Iran said the U.S. operation killed and injured members of its Revolutionary Guard and civilians. Tehran promised to retaliate.

Iran also claimed attacks on US military positions in Jordan and said it shot down an American MQ-9 drone over the Strait of Hormuz. Jordan meanwhile said it intercepted eight missiles after they entered its airspace.

But there is little clarity about the Al Minhad incident. Independent verification of casualties or damage to the base has not been possible. The UAE has also urged the public to rely on official sources. The Defense Ministry of the UAE denied reports of a missile attack on Al Minhad saying reports of a missile attack were unfounded. More clarification is needed on this.

However, the latest developments are another sharp escalation in an already volatile regional conflict. With U.S. troops on bases throughout the Gulf and tensions over the Strait of Hormuz increasing, further retaliation could have significant consequences for regional security, military operations and global energy markets.
