Subsidy will be provided to the wheat producers of the flood-hit areas by the Punjab government to increase wheat production despite flood losses, said the Minister for Agriculture for Punjab, Hussain Gardezi. He was speaking at the convention on Wheat Production at the Central Cotton Research Institute. He told the gathering that “the government is planning to announce a very good price for wheat producers so the farmers should work to maximize their crop yield to get a maximum monetary return.”
“Efforts of the farmers to increase wheat yield will also help the country at large to fight the problem of food insecurity, especially in the wake of recent floods. Since the share of Punjab province is 75% of the total wheat production of the country, it was essential that the farmers from Punjab are helped by the government in these hard times,” he said.
“The total amount of subsidy by the Punjab government will be PKR 12.59 billion. Cultivation of wheat will also be increased per acre as in Multan for example. There the cultivation will be increased to 1.8 million acres,” he added. On this occasion, Director General Water Management Zafar Ullah Sindhu, Dr Shafqat Saeed, Director Agriculture Shehzad Sabir and many farmers were also present.
