The porters working at different railway stations in Pakistan have asked the government to pay them compensation as the train service had been suspended due to recent torrential rains and floods.
“We are unable to feed our families owing to train service suspension,” the railway porters told the media.
They said that the country had faced the worst floods in its history which affected daily wage earners the most.
After the railway’s operations were suspended, the government announced Rs 10,000 each for the porters, so that their lives were not affected. But most of them were yet to receive any assistance and were facing severe financial problems, they said.
The porters said they tried to find some other jobs but failed. “Now we are just praying that the railway restarts operations so that we could start earning again.”
They said some generous people provided them with ration bags, which helped them to some extent.
The porters said the government should restore the operation of the trains as soon as possible so that they could earn money and feed their families. But the floods have badly affected the train service of Pakistan Railways as the track is still submerged.
