Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has relaunched its flights to the picturesque Skardu Valley from Lahore and Karachi, aimed at domestic and foreign tourists. The thrilling journey offers a mesmerising experience as they fly above some of the world’s highest mountains, glaciers and turquoise lakes in northern Pakistan. "All our Skardu-bound flights fly over iconic landmarks such as K2 (the world’s second highest mountain), Nanga Parbat, Lake Saiful Malook, and Ansoo Lake, leaving passengers spellbound as they witness the unique natural beauty from their window seats," PIA General Manager Public Relations Abdullah Hafeez told WealthPK.
While PIA operates the Islamabad-Skardu flight throughout the year, it establishes connections between Lahore and Karachi with Skardu via bi-weekly flights during the tourist season from May to September. “Direct flights from Lahore and Karachi were initially launched in 2021, which received a positive response from both domestic and international tourists,” he mentioned. Last year, PIA also introduced connections between Skardu, Faisalabad and Sialkot, as many people preferred exploring domestic tourist destinations.
"If there is a demand from travellers, we may offer these flights this year as well," the official said. Abdullah said the departure time of the Islamabad-Skardu flight is scheduled to accommodate travellers connecting from Karachi-Islamabad and Quetta-Islamabad flights to let them enjoy the beauty of northern areas. PIA operates Airbus A320 aircraft on Skardu-bound flights to ensure a relatively comfortable and quiet journey. "The flight cruises at an altitude of 33,000 to 35,000 feet before landing in Skardu. The journey takes approximately 155 minutes from Karachi, 90 minutes from Lahore, and 50 minutes from Islamabad," he informed.
In an effort to showcase the spectacular beauty of the northern areas to a maximum number of tourists, particularly domestic travellers, PIA offers subsidised fares on flights to the northern areas in comparison to other domestic destinations. “As many people are unaware of the scenic locations within the country, there has been an extensive PIA operation in northern areas over the last two years, which has given tourism a three-time boost in that region," the official said.
Furthermore, PIA has plans to relaunch Air Safari from Islamabad this month. “The Air Safari is a thrilling 90-minute aerial excursion that takes passengers close to the lofty mountains up to Concordia. Along the way, they can witness stunning views of K2, Broad Peak, Masherbrum, Gasherbrum I and II, Rakaposhi, as well as the Deosani Plain and huge glaciers,” Abdullah said.
While domestic tourists are also welcome to experience the Air Safari, it is primarily popular among foreigners. “Foreign tourists can enjoy this remarkable flight to the northern areas for as little as $250, making it an affordable and unforgettable experience,” the official said. However, for those who may find the subsidised rates of PIA still unaffordable, an alternative option is to reach Skardu from Islamabad via the Northern Areas Transport Corporation (NATCO) buses. NATCO offers both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned bus services on subsidised rates, and the journey from Islamabad to Skardu takes approximately 18 hours. According to a NATCO booking office representative, the road quality is good, and travelling by road is considered safe.
Overall, PIA's efforts to promote tourism in the northern areas through the relaunch of flights to Skardu Valley, and the upcoming Air Safari provide travellers with exceptional opportunities to explore the natural beauty of Pakistan's breathtaking landscapes. Whether flying above majestic mountains or embarking on a scenic road trip, visitors are sure to be captivated by the wonders that await them in Skardu and on their way.
