By Syed Marwan Shah ISLAMABAD, May 26 (INP-WealthPK): Two upgraded and refurbished units at the Mangla power station have been operationalised. United States Agency for International Development’s Mission Director Julie A Koenen unveiled the plaque at Mangla hydel power station to mark the commissioning of units 5 and 6, refurbished with a USAID grant as part of the Mangla Refurbishment Project. The Water and Power Development Authority’s Member (Power) Jamil Akhtar was also present at the inaugural ceremony. The upgradation of units 5 and 6 was carried out under Phase-1 of the Mangla Power Refurbishment Project. The Mangla hydroelectric power station, which is located in the Mirpur district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, produces 1,000 megawatts of electricity from 10 generating units. However, the power generation capacity has been reduced to less than 980MW due to dilapidated equipment, reports WealthPK. According to the USAID, the units 5 and 6 previously had a combined generation capacity of 80MW and 100MW respectively, which have now all been increased to 135MW. That is enough electricity to sustain a population of 833,580 people. As a result of the refurbishment and upgradation of the two units, the dam's revenue from electricity sales is expected to be about $60 million per year, WealthPK research shows.
