To prevent crime, improve public safety, and respond quickly to emergencies, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is upgrading the police department with artificial intelligence-based advanced digital security measures.

As part of the system, advanced digital security technologies such as AI and big data analytics are used to enhance surveillance capabilities and track suspects in real-time, according to a statement of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Technology Board (KPITB) received by WealthPK.

It said the initiative has been taken with the help of the Department of Science and Information Technology, District Police Office Mardan, Deputy Commissioner Office and National Centre of Artificial Intelligence (NCAI), and University of Engineering and Technology to promote smart solutions for better and safer Mardan.

Smart solutions for a better and safer district have two projects -- an AI-based pilot safe city project, and a paperless file management system in the DC Office Mardan. This AI-based safe city pilot program will ensure the safety of the district by incorporating smart city surveillance cameras backed by AI and facial recognition. This will significantly reduce the possibility of human error. Consequently, this will provide citizens of the district with what they deserve and allow them to engage more effectively with their local government.

The paperless file management system will provide efficiency to allow individuals to access information in a faster and much easier way, said the statement.

At the launching ceremony, Provincial Minister for Science and Information Technology Atif Khan said the project complies with the objectives of the Digital Pakistan vision, which aims to promote and enhance security in cities. The objective of this vision is to improve the quality of life, increase the efficiency of city operations and services, and strengthen the city's competitiveness by utilising advanced technology. This is part of an effort to meet the security concerns of current and future generations.

"By implementing both the Mardan safe city project and the paperless file management system, we are creating a future for the district that is safe, smart, and efficient," said the minister.
