Public will get fresh fish, straight out of ponds after the Fisheries Department of South Punjab will complete its new initiative to develop fish centers with modern facilities for fish-breeding and fish-farming.
The department is currently working on developing such farms in the districts of Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan and Bahawalpur. According to Director General Fisheries South Punjab Dr Zahid Sharif, “The department is working to provide fresh and quality fish to the public. For this reason, modern fish outlets are being constructed where citizens can hunt fish themselves. It will not only offer recreation to the public but will also provide protein-rich quality diet to people.”
Dr Zahid said that the fish farm in Bahawalpur was already operational. The other two were under construction in Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan. In Multan, a modern fish outlet was being constructed at the Fisheries office, he said.
Dr Zahid continued that the modern outlet culture will help improve the consumption of protein-rich fish in the city.
“In Pakistan, fish consumption is very low, with only two kilograms per person annually, whereas, it is 22 kgs globally. In coastal areas, people consume more fish as compared to the citizens living in other areas of Pakistan,” the Director General added.
