Farmers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have demanded that tobacco production should be declared a provincial subject in line with the 18th Constitutional Amendment. They have also demanded to set the price for tobacco at PKR 5000 per kg in the ongoing season.
These demands were put forward during a public gathering organized by the Ittehad-e-Kashtkaran (United Farmers) group. Farmers have collectively demanded that the government give them subsidy and incentives in agriculture, food, poultry, livestock and fish farming.
During the public gathering, Chairman of the Ittehad-e-Kashtkaran Arif Ali put the demands on behalf of the farmers before the government. He demanded that housing societies should be banned from being established on agricultural land. He further highlighted the need of incentives and subsidies for the development of agriculture, livestock, fish, and poultry sectors.
He added, “we need to be given an insurance policy against climate disasters and other un-foreseen natural events which destroy our crops.” The meeting was also attended by the Provincial General Secretary of the Awami National Party (ANP) Sardar Hussain Babak, MPA Ahmad Karim Kundi and a large number of tobacco growers.
