Descon Oxychem Limited is the first Pakistani company in the chemicals sector to have obtained the UN Mark Certification for its quality product packaging, which will have a positive impact on its outbound sales and the country’s overall exports. The UN Mark is an internationally recognised standard developed by the United Nations, which signifies a company's commitment to ensuring the highest safety standards for goods transportation. Muhammad Rizwan Qaiser, chief financial officer at Descon Oxychem, told WealthPK that the UN certification opened doors to global markets as it requires firms to meet the requirements of potential customers by ensuring safe and compliant transportation of precarious commodities.
He said thanks to the UN certification, Descon Oxychem is well-positioned to tap into the potential growth of the hydrogen peroxide market, which is projected to reach $5.2 billion globally by the end of this year. He pointed out that the certification would give Descon Oxychem a competitive advantage, helping increase export sales for the company and the country. “This certification will enable the company to expand its production capacity and introduce innovative technologies, thus creating more job opportunities, enhancing the workers’ skills, improving the trading cycle and contributing to the country’s socioeconomic growth,” he explained.
Rizwan Qaiser said as a significant player in the hydrogen peroxide market in Pakistan, Descon Oxychem aimed to expand its presence in export markets and diversify into new sectors such as cosmetics, wastewater treatment, poultry, and livestock. “Many countries have adopted regulations that require the UN Mark certification for the transportation of dangerous goods. Having the certificate enables exporters to navigate customs procedures smoothly and efficiently, ensuring that their goods are not delayed or rejected at borders. This facilitates cross-border trade and reduces potential trade barriers.”
“This certification is particularly relevant to Descon Oxychem, as it operates a state-of-the-art plant producing hydrogen peroxide, a product widely used in various sectors such as textiles, mining, food and beverages, and water disinfection in Pakistan,” Rizwan Qaiser further explained. He said that international buyers, especially those dealing with dangerous goods, often prioritise suppliers who have necessary certifications and comply with international regulations. “The certification will motivate such buyers to choose Descon Oxychem as a reliable supplier.” He said the UN certification would help the company speed up its expansion strategies to capitalise on export opportunities and explore new market segments, which could potentially increase its export revenue.
