Cabinet approves national campaign to conserve energy

January 26, 2023

The Federal Cabinet has given the go-ahead for a national campaign to raise awareness among the public about the need to conserve power, gas, and water. The cabinet demanded that the best global practises for energy saving be covered in the school curriculum during a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The meeting was informed that initiatives to save energy at the governmental, private, domestic, and commercial levels would aid in lowering the import cost of petroleum products, which has significantly climbed during the previous seven years.

Additionally, the behavioural adjustments would result in billions of dollars in foreign exchange savings and a 30% to 40% decrease in domestic power costs. The Cabinet also ordered the development of a comprehensive plan to address the flaws in the national grid system and prevent long power outages. The country's massive power outage annoyed the prime minister, who declared that he would not allow similar events in the future and that the hardship it had caused was intolerable. He directed that the reason for the power outage, which had hampered both the general populace and the business sector, be identified and prevented from happening again.

The cabinet was informed that a committee formed by the prime minister to investigate the power outage has begun its work. The committee will present a thorough report after considering all the key facts. According to the initial assessment, the power supply trip occurred at 7:34 a.m. on Monday owing to a technical issue, voltage fluctuation, and frequency interruption, said Minister for Power Engineer Khurram Dastgir. He said that all available resources were employed in accordance with the prime minister's instructions, and electricity was restored to all major cities by 10 p.m.
