Pakistan's mobile sector experienced exceptional development, with businesses producing over 19.7 million mobile phones and smart gadgets during the previous calendar year, particularly after the government implemented a Mobile Device Manufacturing Policy to promote domestic manufacturing.
The number of imported mobile and smartphone devices has dropped from 10.26 million to a record-low 1.37 million, according to a senior official from the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication. He said that under the Mobile Device Manufacturing Policy, some 30 mobile firms have received permits to begin producing mobile devices locally.
He said a mobile device manufacturing strategy had been created not only to promote domestic manufacturing but also to mitigate the security concern. The official said that in addition to being sold domestically, the mobile gadgets made by these producers may also be exported to other competitive markets.
The gadget manufacturing facilities would be crucial in giving Pakistani customers new employment possibilities and affordable phones, he continued. He said the number of 3G and 4G service customers in Pakistan had greatly increased and touched 121 million by the end of November 2022, while the number of active mobile SIM cards reached 194 million during the same period. The official reported that there were 124 million broadband customers in Pakistan and 56% of households had access to the internet.
