Sindh launches Track & Trace System to monitor supply chain

By Ahmed Khan Malik

The Sindh government has initiated the implementation of a Track & Trace System (TTS) to strengthen monitoring and oversight across the province’s supply chain. The system is designed to enhance transparency, curb leakages and improve regulatory control in key sectors, including pharmaceuticals, tobacco, food items and other regulated products.

According to the Sindh Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department, the Track & Trace System will enable real-time monitoring of production, transportation, distribution and sale of goods across the province. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to modernise governance through digital technologies and data-driven decision-making. Under the system, products will be affixed with unique, secure digital stamps or codes at the manufacturing stage. These codes can be scanned at various points along the supply chain, allowing authorities to track the movement of goods from factories to warehouses, distributors, retailers and ultimately consumers.

The data generated will help identify irregularities such as tax evasion, underreporting of production, counterfeit goods and unauthorised distribution. Speaking to Wealth Pakistan, Director of Excise Waheed Sheikh said the initial phase of the project involves technical planning, stakeholder consultations and the development of a comprehensive regulatory framework. Meetings are being held with manufacturers, distributors, technology providers and relevant departments to ensure smooth implementation and address industry concerns. A pilot phase is expected to be launched once the technical infrastructure and legal requirements are finalised.

“The Track & Trace System will significantly improve supply chain visibility and compliance,” he said, adding that it would help ensure proper tax collection while protecting consumers from substandard and counterfeit products. He noted that the system would also contribute to higher revenue generation by minimizing leakages and improving accuracy in tax assessment. With real-time data on production and sales, authorities would be better positioned to enforce compliance and strengthen fiscal management.

In addition to revenue benefits, the initiative is expected to support public health and consumer protection objectives. In sectors such as pharmaceuticals and food, the system will make it easier to trace product origins, identify sources of contamination and enable swift recalls when necessary. The government also plans to conduct training and awareness sessions to help businesses adapt to the new system. Technical support will be provided to ensure smooth integration of the required technology into existing operations.

The Track & Trace System forms part of the Sindh government’s broader digital transformation agenda, which includes automation of tax administration, expansion of e-governance initiatives and the use of technology to enhance transparency, efficiency and service delivery across departments.
