Planning a Trip North? NDMA Issues Urgent Glacier Flood Alert
For sure, northern Pakistan’s awe-inspiring valleys might be on every traveler’s bucket list this season but a new warning from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is urging travellers to reconsider their plans. The risk of glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs), flash floods and landslides has increased significantly in vulnerable northern regions with pre-monsoon rains expected to intensify across the country.
The NDMA has issued its latest advisory warning of possible dangerous weather conditions over the next few days due to heavy rainfall particularly in the mountainous regions where melting glaciers and swollen rivers pose a serious threat. Authorities have put provincial administrations and emergency response teams on high alert as the weather patterns have become more and more unpredictable.
Residents living near rivers, streams and low-lying areas are advised to be vigilant and to pay close attention to official weather updates. Tourists planning road trips to popular destinations in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other northern regions should avoid unnecessary travel during the periods of intense rainfall as landslides and road blockages may disrupt the transportation and put lives at risk.
NDMA has also advised people to secure outdoor belongings, keep emergency essentials ready and follow local authorities’ instructions. Timely precautions can go a long way in minimising the impacts of weather related disasters and ensuring the safety of the public.
Though Pakistan's northern landscapes remain some of the most spectacular destinations in the country, the weather is changing and caution is more necessary than ever. Travellers should check the latest forecast before heading out and remain flexible with plans until the risk passes.
