Govt moves IHC seeking cancellation of Azam Swati’s bail

The federal government on Wednesday moved to the Islamabad High Court seeking cancellation of bail granted to PTI leader Senator Azam Swati in his controversial tweet case. The federal government submitted its petition through Anisur Rehman, the technical officer of the FIA which is complainant in the case. It is stated in the petition that the special judge central in excess of his powers granted bail to Swati. Apart from the Peca 2016, the judge also granted bail to the accused in other sections. The petition beseeches the IHC to withdraw the special judge’s bail order after declaring it illegal. Prosecutor Raja Rizwan Abbasi filed the petition. Senator Swati has been made respondent in the petition.

On Oct 21, the PTI senator was granted bail by Special Judge Central Raja Asif Mehmood following which he was released from the Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi. The special court ordered Swati to submit his passport and deposit a bond of Rs10,000. The 66-year-old Swati was arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) from Islamabad on Oct 13, 2022, for his controversial tweet. Addressing a press conference yesterday, Swati called upon Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial to investigate the matter of his ‘custodial torture’. He also urged upon Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa to look into his claim. He alleged that during his detention, he was stripped and tortured.
