Former Bangladesh batting great Tamim Iqbal has been appointed president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board following the dissolution of its board of governors. The government disbanded the board, which had been working under Aminul Islam, on the recommendations of a five-member investigative committee, media reports said.
The committee had been examining allegations regarding the transparency of the BCB elections held in October last year, during which questions were raised over the conduct of the poll.
Reports stated that the findings were presented at a briefing at the Ministry of Sports, highlighting irregularities in the electoral process. Tamim Iqbal, 37, became the youngest president in the board’s history. He will lead an 11-member ad hoc committee formed to run the affairs of the board.
The committee includes commentator Athar Ali Khan, former captain Minhajul Abedin and Rafiq-ul-Islam. The development marks a significant change in Bangladesh cricket administration, with expectations that the new set-up will address governance concerns and bring stability to the board.
It is pertinent to note that Tamim Iqbal represented Bangladesh in 70 Tests, scoring 5,134 runs, 243 One Day Internationals with 8,357 runs, and 78 Twenty20 Internationals with 1,758 runs.
