WAPDA hydropower plants have set a new benchmark in Pakistan's energy landscape, supplying over 34 billion units of cost-effective and eco-friendly electricity to the National Grid during the fiscal year 2023-24. Marking a significant increase of 3.26 billion units from the previous year, this achievement not only bolstered national electricity reserves but also saved the exchequer a substantial sum of 143.7 billion rupees. With a tariff of Rs 3.81 per unit, WAPDA hydropower remains the most economical source of electricity in the country. Highlighting its pivotal role in reducing overall electricity costs, WAPDA hydropower currently accounts for 30% of the National Grid's supply.
The organization is actively pursuing multiple projects aimed at further enhancing hydropower capacity nationwide. Presently operating at 9,500 MW, WAPDA's ongoing projects are poised to boost production capacity by an additional 11,200 MW upon completion. By 2029, total hydropower output is projected to reach 20,700 MW, ensuring sustainable energy growth in the years ahead. This surge in hydropower production underscores Pakistan's commitment to leveraging renewable energy sources for economic and environmental benefit, setting a precedent for future energy policy and infrastructure development.
