Two killed, 80 injured in celebratory firing in KarachiBreaking

August 15, 2023

Two people were killed and more than 80 injured in multiple incidents of celebratory firing in Karachi on the eve of Independence Day. The victims included a man who was sleeping on the roof of his house in Lyari and a woman who was travelling on a motorcycle with her family near People's Chowrangi. A minor boy was also injured in a separate incident. The injured were taken to different hospitals in Karachi, where doctors said that they were all in stable condition. Police have launched an investigation into the incidents and are urging people to refrain from celebratory firing.

The practice of celebratory firing is common in Pakistan, especially on festive occasions such as Independence Day. However, it is illegal and can have deadly consequences. In 2022, at least 10 people were killed and over 100 injured in celebratory firing incidents across the country. Police have repeatedly warned people against celebratory firing, but the practice persists. It is a serious safety hazard and needs to be stopped.
