December 04, 2024

Former Indian Punjab’s deputy chief minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Wednesday when a man opened fire at him while he was performing 'seva' outside the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The incident, captured on video, showed the attacker, later identified as Narayan Singh Chaura, pulling out a pistol and firing at Badal, who was seated in a wheelchair.

The bullet hit the wall behind him, and he remained unharmed. The attacker was immediately overpowered by onlookers and security personnel at the scene. Badal, who had been serving as a 'sevadar' (volunteer) at the temple following a religious penance, was unharmed. SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema expressed gratitude, saying, "Thank God for saving his life," and criticized the state government for the security breach, calling it part of a larger conspiracy.
