The Nai Gaj Dam project in Khairpur Nathan Shah, Sindh, remains incomplete after 19 years of delays since its groundbreaking in 2005 by former Chief Minister Sindh Liaquat Jatoi. It reports that despite an investment of Rs 95 billion so far, the project has been plagued by corruption allegations and repeated halts in construction. Once completed, the dam is expected to irrigate 100,000 acres of land and generate 2.4 MW of hydroelectric power. Additionally, it would supply water to Manchar Lake, enhancing water resources in the region.
According to WAPDA, the dam, located on the Gaj River at the edge of the Kirthar range, has a design height of 194 feet and a gross storage capacity of 300,000 acre-feet. Initially estimated to cost Rs16.9 billion in 2009, the cost skyrocketed to Rs46.98 billion in the 2nd revised PC-I of 2021. WAPDA General Manager South, Engineer Aijaz Hussain Memon, oversees the project as in charge. The dam has achieved only 42.78% physical progress, with construction currently halted due to flood damage and submerged access routes. Its revised completion date was set for October 2024, though delays make this target uncertain.
