Renowned economist appointed as DG ADB's East Asia DepartmentBreaking

Renowned Pakistani agricultural economist Muhammad Ehsan Khan has been appointed Director General of the Asian Development Bank's (ADB) East Asia Department, effective immediately. He will oversee the bank's vision and strategies for the region, which comprises some of the world's most dynamic economies. Mr. Khan brings over 34 years of experience to his new role, including 21 years with the ADB itself. During his tenure at the bank, he has made significant contributions, including leading the COVID-19 Pandemic Response Option operations in Central and West Asia. He has also played a key role in organizing several of ADB's annual meetings. Speaking about his new appointment, Mr. Khan expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm: "I am honored to serve East Asia, a region deeply committed to combating climate change – an effort that ADB is actively supporting as Asia and the Pacific's climate bank."

He further emphasized his commitment to strengthening partnerships with East Asian nations: "I look forward to working with our developing member countries to build inclusive and sustainable growth, efficient and equitable services, and resilience against economic shocks." Mr. Khan holds a doctorate in Agricultural Economics from Oklahoma State University, USA, and a Master's degree in the same field from the University of Wyoming. He also holds a Bachelor's degree from Colorado State University. His extensive academic background and diverse experience make him well-suited to lead the ADB's East Asia Department in navigating the region's complex economic landscape and achieving sustainable development goals.
