President Asif Ali Zardari has reaffirmed Pakistan's dedication to developing a safe, sustainable, and environmentally friendly transportation system. Speaking via video message at the Global Sustainable Transport Forum-2024 in Beijing, he emphasized the need for collaboration with China to achieve sustainable development goals that promise an era of peace and prosperity. In his address, President Zardari underscored the necessity for resilient infrastructure that supports efficient, low-carbon transport solutions to meet global demands. He commended China's leadership in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly highlighting the vital role of the transport sector. The President outlined several initiatives undertaken by the Pakistani government, including the introduction of pink buses specifically designed for women, aimed at providing a safe and comfortable public transport option.
He also reported significant improvements in rural accessibility, with 92% of all-weather roads now serving rural areas, a crucial step towards promoting sustainable development and essential services for the rural population. Addressing the challenges posed by climate change, President Zardari noted the recent devastating floods and extreme weather conditions that have severely impacted Pakistan's transport infrastructure, isolating millions, especially in rural regions. He expressed gratitude for China's role in fostering sustainable development and its contributions to both regional and global economic prosperity. The President extended Pakistan's support for developing sustainable transport cooperation among member states and appreciated the initiatives led by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
