Shakeel Ahmad, a mechanic and historic-engine enthusiast from Multan, is working to preserve traditional mechanical engineering by maintaining and operating a nearly 200-year-old engine.
Ahmad shares videos of historic engines through his TikTok account, @shakeel.713 where his content has attracted millions of views. His videos introduce audiences to the craftsmanship, engineering and mechanical technology of earlier generations.
According to family history, the historic engine was brought from the United Kingdom to Pakistan in 1874 by Ahmad’s grandfather. The machine was originally intended for railway use and was later used for agricultural and industrial purposes.
Today, the engine remains operational and is used to power a wood-cutting machine and a water pump. It produces approximately 35 horsepower and operates on LDO fuel.
Maintaining an engine of this age requires technical knowledge, patience and regular care. Starting the machine during winter can be challenging. To make the starting process easier, Ahmad installed a 70cc motorbike engine to assist in starting the historic machine.
The distinctive sound and moving mechanical parts of the engine have attracted viewers on social media. Ahmad uses his videos to explain the importance of preserving older machines and sharing their engineering history with younger generations.
He believes historic engines can help students, mechanics and engineering enthusiasts understand the development of mechanical technology.
Through his restoration and maintenance work, Ahmad aims to keep these machines operational and protect their historical value for future generations.
