Pakistan Railways took a significant step towards self-reliance and improved cargo transport with the inauguration of 40 high-capacity freight wagons manufactured locally. These wagons, designed with international standards in mind, boast a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour and a load capacity of 70 tons. This marks a major upgrade for Pakistan's railways, allowing for faster and more efficient movement of goods. The ceremony at Lahore Cantt Railway Station was led by CEO Railways Aamir Ali Baloch. He highlighted the project's contribution to saving foreign exchange by eliminating reliance on imported wagons. "This freight train was made completely in our workshop," said Baloch. "By the end of FY 2025-26, we aim to induct 820 such wagons into the railway system." Baloch elaborated on the projected financial benefits, stating, "These wagons are expected to increase our annual income by over 9 billion rupees."
He further emphasized the positive impact on Pakistan Railways' overall revenue. "We are confident of collecting more than 85 billion rupees, with freight revenue alone exceeding 35 billion rupees." The CEO also addressed the much-anticipated ML-1 railway project, confirming its approval and the resumption of work on strategic projects in collaboration with China. Additionally, Baloch reassured that the pension issue for railway employees is under review, with a finalized policy expected soon. Pakistan's shift towards local wagon production signifies a commitment to modernization and self-sufficiency in the railway sector. This initiative is expected to enhance cargo movement efficiency, generate revenue, and contribute to the overall growth of the national economy.
