LHC to hear petition challenging appointment of retired judges as election tribunalBreaking

July 13, 2024

The Lahore High Court has scheduled a hearing for July 15 regarding a petition challenging the ordinance appointing retired judges as members of the Election Tribunal. Justice Shahid Karim will preside over the case, which has been brought forward by Salman Akram Raja and others. The petitioners argue that the Election Ordinance 2024, which designates retired judges to serve as election tribunal members, should be declared illegal and unconstitutional. They contend that the appointment of these retired judges under the ordinance is not permissible. Furthermore, the petition requests that retired judges be restrained from forming the election tribunal until a final decision is reached on the matter. This legal challenge highlights concerns over the legitimacy and constitutionality of the ordinance, potentially impacting the structure and functioning of election tribunals in Punjab.
