Islamabad Memorandum a victory of Pakistan's strong diplomacy: Asim IftikharBreaking

Akistan’s future permanent representative to the United Nations has described the Islamabad Memorandum as a major victory of strong and committed diplomacy, saying the agreement continues to provide a framework for dialogue between the United States and Iran. Addressing an emergency session of the UN Security Council, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said the Islamabad Memorandum reflects Pakistan’s longstanding position that regional conflicts can only be resolved through diplomacy and negotiations.

He said Pakistan’s mediation efforts are driven by its commitment to regional and global peace, aimed at saving lives, reducing tensions and paving the way for structured negotiations leading to sustainable mutual understanding and a final agreement. The Islamabad Memorandum was signed on June 17, 2026, by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. rime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the memorandum as mediator on June 18 after facilitating the agreement between Washington and Tehran aimed at ending conflict in the Middle East.

Asim Iftikhar further said Pakistan’s leadership has remained in contact with negotiating parties, regional partners and other countries to maintain diplomatic momentum under the agreement. He added that the continuation of dialogue and the fact that all sides remain engaged at the negotiating table is a significant and positive outcome. Pakistan, he said, continues to facilitate talks and confidence-building measures to prevent further escalation and sustain diplomatic engagement. e said communication channels between the parties remain open and Pakistan continues efforts to promote peace and stability across the region.
