Inflation rises as 13-party coalition ruins Pakistan's economyBreaking

August 30, 2023

Awami Muslim League leader Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has criticized the 16-month rule of the 13-party coalition government, and  said it has ruined Pakistan's economy. In a tweet on Wednesday, Rashid said that inflation has gone sky-high and electricity bills have doubled. He also expressed concern that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) may withdraw its support for Pakistan's economy. Rashid also questioned the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) decision to release the schedule for demarcation of constituencies before consulting with political parties. "The masses are not a political party, they are a symbol of stability and security of the country," he said.

Rashid concluded by saying that the problem facing Pakistan is more economic than political. "Inflation and electricity have become a matter of survival. Neither the kitchen is running nor the factory, the shop [due to inflation]," he said. Rashid's criticism comes at a time when the Pakistani economy is facing a number of challenges, including high inflation, rising debt, and a widening current account deficit. The IMF has already warned Pakistan that it may need to take additional measures to stabilize its economy. It remains to be seen how the government will respond to Rashid's criticism. However, his comments suggest that the coalition government is facing increasing pressure from the public over its handling of the economy.
