Karachi residents could soon face another financial burden as the federal government has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to increase electricity prices by PKR 1.72 per unit. This increase, if approved, would be applied retroactively to the second and third quarters of the previous fiscal year. Specifically, the government seeks an additional PKR 0.25 per unit for the January-March 2023 quarter and PKR 0.47 per unit for the October-December 2022 quarter.
Sources indicate that the government's primary motivation for this price hike is to achieve a uniform electricity tariff across the country. However, for Karachi residents already struggling with rising inflation, this news comes as a significant blow to their household budgets.NEPRA is expected to hold a hearing on December 20th to consider the government's request. If approved, the increased electricity prices would be implemented immediately, adding yet another layer of financial hardship to Karachiites.
