Govt imports Urea, LNG to secure fertilizer supply: Energy MinisterBreaking

December 13, 2023

Pakistan has imported the required amount of fertilizer to meet its agricultural needs, according to a joint press conference on Wednesday held by the Caretaker Federal Ministers for Energy, Interior, and Information. Minister Muhammad Ali, addressing the longstanding issue of plant shutdowns during winter due to gas shortages, assured the public that all fertilizer plants would remain operational throughout the winter months. Highlighting the government's efforts to secure fertilizer supply, Minister Ali confirmed the ongoing import of urea and emphasized communication with fertilizer companies. He expressed concern over potential exploitation by middlemen and highlighted the critical role of imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) in maintaining a steady gas supply to fertilizer factories.

Minister Ali acknowledged a nationwide decrease in gas supply by 8 to 9 percent. To address this, the government is actively importing LNG and boosting the production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Additionally, the Minister emphasized the importance of exploring domestic gas production reserves, particularly in light of increased revolving credit and the departure of foreign companies. The press conference concluded with Minister Ali's assurance that the government is taking necessary measures to address the energy sector's challenges, prioritizing fertilizer imports and domestic production to ensure sufficient agricultural supplies.
