Govt cancels dance education notification in schools on parental pressureBreaking

April 06, 2024

The Federal Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (FMVEVT) in Pakistan has withdrawn a notification regarding dance education in government schools. This move comes after parents raised concerns about the initiative. The original notification, issued at the request of UNESCO, called for a dance competition in schools. However, it sparked immediate opposition from parents who urged the government to cancel it. In response to the controversy, the FMVEVT issued a clarification. The ministry acknowledged UNESCO's role in promoting education and cultural exchange globally. It emphasized that the "Dance for Education" program was not mandatory and was only intended to raise awareness about UNESCO's initiatives.

The FMVEVT spokesperson further clarified that neither the ministry nor Pakistan's National Commission for UNESCO directed or organized the program. The notification, they explained, was solely for informational purposes. The ministry concluded the statement by expressing regret for any misunderstanding caused and reiterated its commitment to educational development. This incident highlights the complexities of introducing cultural programs in educational institutions, particularly when they touch upon sensitive social norms.
