Agriculture experts on Tuesday urged farmers to closely adhere to an irrigation schedule for spring sunflower crops, citing the critical role of timely watering in maximizing per-acre yields and enhancing oil quality.A spokesperson from the agriculture (extension) department emphasized the importance of irrigation during the crop’s sensitive growth phases, which include seed germination, flowering and seed formation.
Any water shortage during these key stages, experts warn, can negatively impact both the yield and the quality of the crop."The first irrigation should be applied immediately after the complete emergence of the crop to ensure uniform germination and establish strong plant growth," the spokesperson explained.Subsequent irrigation was equally crucial.
The second watering was recommended 20 to 25 days after the first to support early vegetative growth, ensuring a healthy and robust plant development. However, experts highlighted that the most critical irrigation occurs during the flowering stage,as it directly impacts crop productivity.
Additionally, irrigation at the seed formation stage not only boosts seed weight but also significantly enhances the oil content, which was vital for the sunflower’s commercial value. The department urges farmers to strictly follow the recommended irrigation schedule to optimize their harvest, improve oil yield and contribute to sustainable sunflower production in the region.
