Ethics committee formed amid Punjab Assembly chaosBreaking

June 29, 2024

Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan announced the establishment of an ethics committee in response to recent disruptions in the Punjab Assembly. While talking to media in Lahore, Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, underscored the importance of maintaining democratic traditions and respect for the parliament. He emphasized the need for a code of conduct to uphold the sanctity of the legislative house, a responsibility he believes rests with all members. Addressing the current state of the Assembly, Khan expressed concern over the decline in decorum, stating, "Personal interests are taking precedence, with slogans once limited to protests now escalating to abusive language towards family members, which is unacceptable." He vowed to uphold his duty to maintain order within the house, asserting that he will not allow the environment to deteriorate further.

Khan highlighted the shift from mere disruptive behavior to the use of foul language and verbal abuse. "Protest is a right, but it has now devolved into rioting and inflammatory sloganeering," he said. The Speaker recounted instances of abuse within the House during his tenure, stressing that the degradation of the Assembly's atmosphere is a collective responsibility of its members. "This is not a rally or a container; we must foster dialogue," he remarked. Khan condemned the use of inappropriate slogans and noted that despite a tax-free budget being presented, the opposition's conduct remained intolerable. He concluded by affirming his resolve to use his authority if members continue to fall below acceptable moral standards.
