In a surprising breach of security, the Safe City Project’s distribution box installed in Karachi’s Clifton area for surveillance and e-challan cameras has been stolen. The Director General Safe City Project Karachi, Asif Ijaz Sheikh, confirmed the theft, saying that following the incident, cameras connected to the system had to be taken down. The DG said that the distribution box (DB) was stolen from a square in Clifton, causing the surveillance cameras to stop functioning.
DG Safe City Project Asif Ijaz Sheikh explained that the cameras were removed from the poles and secured after the theft to prevent further damage. He added that the stolen distribution box contained equipment worth millions of rupees and that the Safe City cameras were directly linked to it, resulting in their shutdown. The DG further stated that the theft not only affected the Safe City surveillance system but also rendered the e-challan cameras vulnerable.
According to him, district police had already been instructed to ensure the protection of Safe City installations, and meetings had been held with zonal DIGs regarding this issue. He termed the theft from the Safe City Project a “deeply concerning matter,” highlighting the need for stronger safeguards around the city’s surveillance infrastructure.
