The district administration in Peshawar launched a special campaign against professional beggars on Wednesday. According to official spokespersons, five teams were constituted to conduct operations on a daily basis in certain areas of the city. On the first day of the campaign, hundreds of professional beggars were arrested from different places in Peshawar under the Anti-Beggary Act and transferred to Darul Kafala, a government-run shelter home. The Department of Social Welfare, Child Protection Unit, Rescue, and other organizations participated in the ongoing campaign against the beggars.
The district administration said that the complete data and records of the beggars arrested during the campaign would also be collected. The teams of district administration would conduct crackdowns on a daily basis in Hayatabad, Hashangari, Gulbahar, Firdous, Jameel Chowk, University Town, Aman Road and many other prominent places.The district administration said that the crackdown was launched to discourage professional begging, which has become a nuisance in the city.The administration also urged citizens to not give money to beggars, as it encourages them to continue begging.
