Charters of democracy, economy need of the times: Ishaq DarBreaking

March 08, 2024

PML-N Senator Ishaq Dar has said that the process of national reconciliation means that political parties should not have any “personal enmity” amongst them. Speaking on the floor of the Senate, the former finance minister recalled negotiations with the PTI to end its 2014 Islamabad sit-in. Dar said, “Reconciliation means that we should not have any personal enmity. We are working for the system [and] for Pakistan and with that spirit, if there is something against our national interest, then we should definitely stop each other.” “Charter of Democracy and Charter of Economy are the need of time,” the PML-N stalwart asserted. PML-N Senator Ishaq Dar has said he has been “begging in the Parliament” for the adoption of a Charter of Economy for the past decade. He then recalled presenting another four consecutive frameworks, adding, “The spirit was ‘let’s come together’ and at least make an economic roadmap [and] sign a Charter of Economy.

“Let the public be witness like it was during the Charter of Democracy,” the ex-finance minister added. PML-N Senator Ishaq Dar has expressed his dismay at the ruckus witnessed in the National Assembly in recent days and urged political parties to work towards “reconciliation”. He said, “Coming to the recent whatever has been happening for the last few weeks, this should be handled. “A symbolic protest is fine but by doing it all the time, the message being sent to the world is not good. “You have seen what happened in the National Assembly, but this House has its own sanctity, symbolism [and] position, which warrants that even if we have to protest, we have to do so within the parliamentary limits, with thoughtfulness and consideration.” Stating that he was a “big believer of reconciliation”, he recalled PM Shehbaz Sharif’s call for national reconciliation.
